Samudra Yoga & Surfing Retreat

Samudra Epic Yoga & Surfing Retreat, Dunsborough, WA

This is going to be amazing! The highlight of the 2011 tour is an all inclusive retreat in the most magnificent and secluded part of the world - Dunsborough, Western Australia.  Join David Wolfe, for the definitive retreat experience where you get to spend five days and four nights immersing in the knowledge, energy and insights of one of the most powerful leaders on the forefronts of live food and superfood education today.

Featuring an exceptional line-up of activities that you will not find anywhere else in the world, and hosted by yoga, surfing, raw food and retreat experts – the team at Samudra; this is a once in a life-time opportunity to get up close and personal with David, for a limited group of select people ready to learn the secrets of health and longevity from the master himself, in a stunning beach setting.

Samudra has put together a fantastic schedule for this retreat, with a diverse range of activities to complement the topics that David will be delving deeply into over the week.  Having a small group together with David for a the whole time of the retreat, it is a great opportunity to get to know David, to really get into his mind and find answers to all the questions you have been longing to ask.  With lectures interspersed around the fun, there will be plenty to learn, with the talks being so fascinating, they will keep us going late into the night!

Together with the life-changing knowledge you will gain, your health will nurtured by Samudra’s vegan cafe providing all the meals for the retreat guests during the week. With professional raw chef’s on staff, the food is going to be one of the highlights of  the week!

We kick off the retreat on Monday 28th Feb in the afternoon.  Arriving by 3pm onwards, and enjoying a welcome smoothie and mingle with the other retreat guests at Samudra at 5pm.  Then we’ll have an introduction to the week’s events and meet David and your hosts, before sharing a gourmet raw vegan dinner together and going into one of David’s motivating lectures.

Every morning we start with a guided Astanga class at Samudra’s Yoga Shala. At Samudra, whether in a class or on a retreat, yoga is the focus and it’s all about fun and learning. More than just yoga poses, we draw from the traditional practice of Astanga yoga, which can provide a foundation for living and a constant direction in your life.

The practice of Astanga yoga is an ancient and powerful discipline for cultivating physical, mental and spiritual growth. Progressive techniques of breath, posture and movement, cleanse, stretch and strengthen the body. It focuses and calms the mind, and a deeper experience of the self becomes possible through consistent practice.

After breakfast we have a range of group activities over the three days.  The first activity will be surfing lessons at the beautiful nearby beaches.  Transport is arranged and will take us to the best spot for a bit of sun surf!

If you’re not a surfer, don’t worry!  You can either have a lesson and learn the basics, or just enjoy the sun and the sand and have a swim while the others are riding the waves.

Another of the planned activities is to experience some indigenous Australian culture at the Wardan Aboriginal Centre.  The local Wardandi people will take us on a guided bush walk with focus on food, medicine and ecology, and we will also break into separate male and female groups for a dance ceremony with traditional face painting and discussions of tribal lore, with mens’ and women’s secrets shared within our gender groups.

The Wardandi People are the traditional custodians of the land bounded by Capel to the Northeast, Augusta in the South and including the regions now known as Busselton, Yallingup and Margaret River. They have a strong connection to the sea, and are the custodians of the many caves in the area. The caves are the passages to the after-life and the region of the sea god Wardan.

The Wardan Aboriginal Cultural Centre was developed by the Wardandi people as a place where they can share their culture with visitors, school groups and Aboriginal people from other areas, in an effort to increase understanding and reconciliation with the wider community. The Wardan Centre Gallery exhibits and sells the works of the Wardandi people and Southwest Noongah art works. Visiting exhibitions also bring works from the Northwest. The Centre has become know for its extensive collection and its policy of giving exposure to developing as well as established Indigenous artists.Various works on display are the interpretation of important elements of the Wardandi people’s existence and experience.

Another part of our retreat adventure, takes us on a cave crawl in Ngilgi Cave.

The Story Of Ngilgi

Ngilgi Cave is associated with a rich Aboriginal legend describing a battle between a good and an evil spirit. The local Wardandi people tell the story as: Ngilgi, a good warrior spirit, lived near the sea and Wolgine, an evil spirit, lived in the cave. Concerned for the welfare of his people, Ngilgi gathered together the spirits of the waves, lightning, rain, thunder and wind and they created a huge storm. Ngilgi attacked Wolgine and he gradually drove Wolgine back through the cave. So fierce was the battle that a tunnel collapsed, cutting the cave off from the sea.

The collapsed tunnel can still be seen today as a deep gully a short distance from the cave. Eventually Wolgine was driven up through the earth creating the present entrance. Wolgine was banished from the cave and Ngilgi claimed it as his own thus the cave became known as Ngilgis Nurilem (cave).

In the afternoon we’re taking a trip to Injuidup natural amphitheatre – a huge terraced caved walled space, set amongst 50 acres of raw bushland and only a short stroll to the beach, the amphitheatre is the perfect venue for David to talk about connecting back to nature, earthing, and the environment.  Back at Samudra, we’ll be enjoying a sumptuous raw dinner and then David will take us into the night with another of his eye-opening talks.

One of the other retreat activities that is on offer, is a traditional sweat lodge held at the local Wise Winery.  Breaking into two groups, one will attend the sweat lodge while the other relaxes at Samudra before changing over.

Sweat Lodge is a ceremony that has been used by many Native American Tribes and other indigenous people for centuries.  A sweat lodge is not just a sauna, it a very sacred ceremony of spiritual and physical purification, where the main focus is prayer.  The sweat lodge most people are familiar with is commonly called prayer and purification sweat. David will be leading us through this traditional practice.

There will also be some free time to relax and enjoy the local area, with an optional afternoon walk to Geographe Bay for those who would like to hike through this beautiful area.
